Iowa 80 Truckstop to Host Interstate 50th Anniversary Celebration This Friday

WALCOTT, IOWA — The American Association of State Highway Officials (AASHTO), headquartered in Washington, DC, has officially selected Iowa 80 TA Truckstop as one of only two stops in Iowa for its cross-country convoy set for June. Starting June 15 in San Francisco, a caravan of motor vehicles will make its way across the U.S.A., stopping June 23 at Iowa 80 Truckstop. From there the convoy will continue east, arriving June 29 in Washington, DC . June 29 marks the 50th anniversary of the signing of the federal law that provided funding for the construction of the Interstate Highway System.

The purpose of the national convoy is to raise public awareness about the importance of the Interstate System and its needs upon its 50th birthday. While often taken for granted, the Interstate Highway System has profoundly altered American society by changing the way this country moves people and goods. “My father selected this spot for Iowa 80 Truckstop back in 1963, the Interstate was not yet complete to Walcott. He knew, even then, that Interstate 80 would be a very important artery of travel,” says Delia Moon Meier, Senior Vice President. “The Interstate System is the lifeline for our business. We proudly celebrate 42 years at Exit 284 and are honored to be part of the Interstate’s 50th Anniversary celebration.”

The visit to Iowa 80 on June 23 will include a reception from 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm at Iowa 80′s Trucking Hall of Fame Museum. The museum features antique trucks, old signs, gas pumps, engines, and other trucking memorabilia.
